The meter should read 0 volts with the leads together.
Your meter my have a problem. Please ESi support at 800-227-1603 to troubleshoot the meter with them.

My 688 reads 1.5 volts with the leads touching each other instead of 0. What should I do?
With the leads not touching, it reads ghost voltage as it should. It never reads 0v with the leads touching. Compared to my other meters, it reads about a volt different.
