Depends on the type of sensor and the type of fault you are experiencing.
Typically, you will want to check the signal wire at the sensor. If it's good there but the module is not reading it, check at the module as well.
You could check the 5V supply at the sensor and if it's not present there, check it at the module.
You should check to make sure the ground to the sensor is good.
