What happens if a 400A spike is measured with this? Probe damage or harmless clipping of excess?

No damage will happen to the probe. If you're using a scope, the signal will clip off of the screen.

Exactly, no damage will happen, I had done , relative compresion tests with a 60 amps low amp prove, with no damage to the scope, nor to the amp prove . What a beautifull and sweet smile of that litle and beautifull girl, blessing to her.
