The Solar PL units have separate controls for voltage maintaining and battery charger. It is much easier to adjust voltage and includes a LCD display. The cables included are heavy duty and have much nicer connections than the xxxx terminal setup on the PowerMax.
The PL series have 3 levels of charging and settings for different battery types.
In our testing, AC noise has also been lower than the PowerMax.
PowerMax units only have a Smart Charging or Fixed mode, no display, and a much less rugged design. Adjusting voltgae is done by a small trim pot and a pocket screwdriver on the side of the unit. Changing between smart charging and is done via a small dip switch on the side of the unit as well.
The one negative to the Solar PL chargers is that they come with a 20-amp 110V service plug instead of the more common 15-amp plug, although changing the receptacle is not that difficult if you already have a 20-amp service to the wall.
